At just 26 years old, Kwanele Mkhize is carving out his place in South African television history with his breakout role as Mbopha kaSithayi in the hit drama Shaka iLembe.
The KwaMaphumulo-born actor says landing this role is a dream come true and a stepping stone to even greater opportunities.
“Joining Shaka iLembe will lead to numerous opportunities. My talent will finally get the recognition it deserves,” he shared.
From Stage to Screen
Mkhize credits his early stage acting experience with preparing him for television.
“Stage taught me discipline and depth in acting things I never knew before,” he explained.
When he learned Shaka iLembe was casting, he didn’t hesitate.
“I couldn’t let this opportunity pass me by. I’m grateful to Bomb Productions for believing in me and to my co-star Lemogang, who has been an incredible partner on screen. My role is just beginning, and I ask viewers to remember it’s acting, don’t hate me for the character,” he joked.
Humble Beginnings
Kwanele’s love for acting began back in school during cultural activities. Encouraged by his supportive mother, he pursued every opportunity to perform.
After matric, he studied Financial Management, but when he struggled to find an internship, he moved to Johannesburg.
“Life was tough, but it’s where my acting journey really took off,” he recalled.
In 2019, he appeared in a Mzansi Magic drama, followed by a film on Netflix. Theatre productions then gave him further exposure in Johannesburg’s performance spaces.
Looking Ahead
This role in Shaka iLembe is Mkhize’s biggest yet, and he believes it’s just the start.
“This is my first major role, and I know I will be remembered as one of the actors who made history with this production,” he said proudly.
