Gavin Hunt: Durban City Must Collect Early Points to Survive

According to Durban City coach Gavin Hunt, the team’s survival in their first Betway Premiership season would depend on their ability to accumulate points early in the season.

The newly-promoted side has picked up eight points through two wins and two draws after plying four matches.

“The team is gelling well, and I’m happy with the commitment shown by the players. That spirit will be crucial as the season progresses,” Hunt said.

Striker Reinforcement Still Needed

Despite a solid start, Hunt admitted the team still lacks firepower upfront.

“Indeed, in key areas we still need just a few more players.  A clinical striker is a priority—someone who can make things happen,” he explained.

So far, City have scored just four goals in four matches, relying mainly on Joslin Kamatuka, Jean Lwamba, and Samkelo Maseko. Both Kamatuka and Maseko have scored once each, while Lwamba is still chasing his first goal.

Phakamani “Phaka” is currently being assessed by the club, hoping he can rediscover his scoring form.

Keet Anchors the Defense

Defensively, Hunt credits veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet for City’s resilience, as they have conceded just a few goals this season.

“Darren is a top-class goalkeeper, and his presence gives us stability. He also faces good competition, which is important for the squad,” Hunt noted.

Keet joined City from Cape Town City after they were relegated last season and is competing for the No.1 spot with Fredrick Asare (ex-Asante Kotoko) and Ayanda Mtshali, who was part of the squad that won promotion.

Next Challenge: Sekhukhune United

At 3 PM on Saturday City will face off against Sekhukhune United at Peter Mokaba stadium.
