One of the standout stars of Mzansi Wethu’s new drama Homecoming is 23-year-old actor Mpilo Mbatha, who says his love for the isiZulu language has become his secret weapon in acting.

Mpilo, originally from Ulundi but raised in Mnambithi, plays Shobane Mnisi in the Tshedza Pictures production, which airs Mondays to Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.

The show, which premiered two weeks ago, replaced Sibongile and The Dlaminis. Viewers have already noticed Mpilo’s captivating delivery, especially in scenes with his on-screen girlfriend, Zethu Hlongwane (played by Six Manyane), where his fluent and refined isiZulu shines through.

Father’s Influence on Language

“My father always insisted that isiZulu must be spoken correctly and with respect, that’s what shaped me. I even go as far as studying new words and meanings so I can use them authentically in my performances,” he said.

This dedication to language, he says, sets him apart in the competitive world of acting.

Grabbing Every Opportunity

Mpilo approaches every acting role as if it could be his last.

“This is not a field I studied for formally, so I treat every opportunity as a blessing. I believe it’s a gift from those who came before us, and I give it everything I have,” he explained.

The actor is also making waves for his role as Mzilikazi in Shaka iLembe, where his strong performance has drawn praise.

A Journey That Began Unexpectedly

Mpilo is entirely focused on acting, even though he has a teaching degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. His path into the performing arts was not prearranged.

“I came there to cheer on a friend, not to try out for Shaka iLembe at all.  But it all began when I fell in love with the craft,” he recounted.

Since then, Mpilo has appeared in The River (2022) and the Showmax series Empini, where he played a lead role as Khaya.
