Primedia Studios, the company behind popular local productions such as Deal or No Deal SA, MasterChef SA, and Wheel of Fortune SA, has announced a new international partnership that could reshape South African television.
In order to bring back a number of popular shows that were formerly broadcast on M-Net, the production behemoth has partnered with Opulent Entertainment Group, which is owned by actor and producer Denim Richards.
Iconic Shows Making a Comeback
Among the shows set for revival are:
- Idols SA – the talent search phenomenon
- Project Runway – spotlighting Africa’s fashion designers
- Dancing with the Stars – a global dance sensation
These international franchises were once staples of South African entertainment but were discontinued due to challenges. Now, with fresh investment and creative collaboration, they are expected to return with a new look and energy.
A Vision for African Talent
Primedia’s Jan du Plessis described the partnership as a “milestone moment,” saying:
“These are a few of the best entertainment formats in the globe. Together with Opulent, we want to create something fresh for African audiences while giving young talent new opportunities.”
Denim Richards echoed the sentiment, emphasizing how collaborations like this can boost Africa’s creative economy:
“Entertainment thrives on reinvention. Reviving these shows with Primedia means not just engaging audiences, but creating jobs and exporting African content to the world.”
Looking Ahead
With production expected to kick off soon, both companies are confident this deal will breathe new life into African television and elevate its standing on the global stage.
