Popular comedian and actor Sabelo Gumede, known for his high-energy performances and recent role on e.tv’s Scandal!, has revealed that he is fighting stage-three choriocarcinoma, a rare but treatable type of cancer.
The entertainer shared that his diagnosis earlier this year has not only taken a toll on his health but also placed him under significant financial strain.
Mounting Medical Costs
Before doctors confirmed the diagnosis, Gumede underwent extensive tests costing more than R100 000. His illness has since spread to his neck, lungs, spine, diaphragm, and lymph nodes.
Although medical aid has covered some of his treatment, Gumede’s funds are running out. With no acting work lined up, he has been forced to rely on his dwindling savings.
GoFundMe Campaign for Help
Encouraged by a close friend, Gumede launched a GoFundMe campaign, allowing fans to donate anonymously and help cover his medical expenses.
In a heartfelt video posted on X by entertainment commentator Jabulani MacDonald, Gumede expressed his gratitude:
“Since I made my cancer diagnosis public, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has been so kind and encouraging.”
He added that his oncologist told him the illness is first fought in the mind, and the supportive messages from fans have kept him motivated.
Industry Calls for Support
Gumede’s appeal has drawn comparisons to similar fundraising efforts, such as veteran actor Glen Gabela’s recent plea, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by artists when illness or hardship strikes.
As Gumede continues treatment, he remains positive and committed to keeping fans updated:
“Even if it’s R1, every donation helps,” he said.
