Alliance with ANC Falls Apart
The South African Communist Party (SACP) has officially confirmed that it will contest the upcoming 2026 local government elections independently of the African National Congress (ANC).
Speaking at a media briefing, General Secretary Solly Mapaila said years of frustration and failed talks with the ANC led to this decision.
“We gave the ANC six months to review the alliance, but nothing happened. They treated us like children, and we cannot continue like that,” Mapaila said.
SACP Says ANC Disrespected the Alliance
Mapaila accused the ANC of undermining the SACP despite the sacrifices it made during the liberation struggle.
“We are equals. We have done much for the ANC, even during the fight for freedom. Respect is non-negotiable,” he added.
He also criticised the ANC for failing to meaningfully transform the lives of Black South Africans in the three decades since democracy.
By-Elections: SACP’s First Test
The SACP will begin contesting by-elections to prepare for the full elections.
“All members must take part in the by-elections. Those who can’t must explain why. We will contest independently, with our own principles,” Mapaila stressed.
Cabinet Positions and Dual Membership
Some SACP leaders currently hold positions in government. Mapaila said it will be up to the ANC whether to remove them. It’s okay if the ANC dismisses our Cabinet members. It’s their decision, not ours,” he stated
He affirmed that dual membership with the ANC is still allowed for SACP members.
