Durban-born singer-songwriter Shekhinah, who had been away from the music scene for years, has officially returned and she’s doing it on her own terms.

The award-winning star released her highly anticipated album What Are We? last Friday, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her career.

“I’m excited to finally be independent in making my own music,” Shekhinah shared. “This album reflects who I am now — more grown, more resilient, and doing music in a way that feels true to me.”

From Idols SA to Independence

“I’ll always be grateful for Idols SA. Even though I didn’t win at first, the lessons I learned there still carry me today,” she said.

She explained that her past albums were created under circumstances she didn’t fully enjoy, often leaving her financially drained. Today, with her own professional recording space and family support, Shekhinah feels more confident and in control.

A Message of Hope in Her Music

According to Shekhinah, the central message of What Are We? is resilience:

“Life gets hard, but things always turn around eventually. This album is about never giving up hope.”

Her fans can expect music that blends her signature soulful sound with fresh, authentic storytelling.

Rosefest: A Return on the Horizon

While her beloved Rosefest has not been staged in Durban for years, Shekhinah assured fans it will make a comeback soon.

“I think it’s still vital to highlight women in music, which is why Rosefest was founded.  I’m working on bringing it back, and I know the support will continue.”
