Soweto, South Africa – TS Galaxy Queens are closing in on defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies in the Safa Hollywoodbets Super League title race after a convincing 2-0 victory over the University of Johannesburg at Soweto Campus Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from Alicia Terhart and Leandra Smeda ensured Galaxy walked away with maximum points. The Mpumalanga-based side now sits on 40 points from 17 matches, just one point behind Sundowns, who lead with 41 points from the same number of games.
This marks a potential turning point in the league, which Sundowns have dominated since the competition’s launch in 2019/20, winning five consecutive titles. The University of the Western Cape (UWC), which was formerly a formidable rival of Sundowns, is still having difficulties.
They suffered a 1-0 defeat to TUT Football Club on Saturday in Cape Town, slipping further behind in the title chase.
On the other hand, Sundowns, who recently missed out on a Caf Women’s Champions League spot after losing to Zesco Ndola Girls of Zambia, are expected to refocus on defending their league crown.
Galaxy Queens will next face City Lads on Saturday at Westbourne Oval in Gqeberha (3pm), while Sundowns take on University of Fort Hare on September 14.
KwaZulu-Natal sides continue to struggle, with Durban Ladies still rooted to the bottom after losing 2-1 to First Touch Ladies, extending their winless run to 20 matches. A tough game was also had by Royal AM, who lost badly against JVW FC 5-0.
Newcomers Ezemvelo Women’s FC from Umlazi offered a brighter story, edging City Lads 1-0 to climb to eighth place in the standings.
