South African music sensation Tyla Laura Seethal has once again etched her name into global music history, winning the Best Afrobeats award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

To win the prized accolade, the 23-year-old Johannesburg superstar outperformed some of the biggest stars in the genre, such as Burna Boy, Rema, Wizkid, and Tems.

The ceremony, held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, saw Tyla turning heads on the red carpet in a vintage Chanel look from the Spring/Summer 1993 collection. She rocked a beige cropped top reimagined as a mini-dress, paired with gold medallions and chic black shorts.

“A Blessing to Africa”

Tyla expressed her thanks and delight in her award speech.

“I am excited; honestly, this is amazing. It was a very difficult category, so congratulations to all of the nominees and to my team, Africa. “Winning another award and being here is truly a blessing,” she remarked.

She has now won the category twice in a row, after her historic victory in 2024 for her worldwide hit song Water.

Double Nomination and New Music Tease

Tyla was nominated in two categories this year, Best Afrobeats and Best Choreography for her track Push 2 Start.

She also teased fans about her upcoming album:

“Just keep an eye out; it is coming, and it is coming in hot, like, for real.”

A Growing Trophy Cabinet

Tyla’s amazing collection of honors now includes her 2024 Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance. She also recently hosted the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards and has been working with leading amapiano producers like Kelvin Momo, Kooldrink, and LuuDaDeejay.

Most recently, Tyla confirmed that she is set to collaborate with DJ Maphorisa, further solidifying her place as one of Africa’s most exciting and versatile artists.
